Arthur Short Bull is a Oglala Lakota watercolorist who has been painting since 1991. Having been raised in a tradtional Lakota family contributes to his artistic vision. The medium of watercolor also gives his work a delicate edge that captures in a single brush stroke a spirituality that is uniquely his.

Arthur’s great-grandfather was Grant Short Bull, uncle to famed artist and historian, Amos Bad Heart Bull and younger brother of He Dog. In 1930, the last of the old men who rode with Crazy Horse at the Little Big Horn and Rosebud fights in 1876, He Dog and Grant Short Bull were two of Mari Sandoz’s sources for her book, “Crazy Horse ... Strange Man of the Oglalas.”

Arthur is deeply involved utilizing his Wounded Knee series of paintings and poems as a vehicle to promote Lakota culture and history. He continues to develop this series as an educational tool to reach out to the Native community, primarily the youth, to increase their knowledge of Native history, especially in regards to Wounded Knee. In 2010, he was a panelist at the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Awards in Washington, D.C.

In 2012 he was the artist-in-residence at the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument in the four-corners area.

Short Bull’s work appears in collections throughout the United States and Europe. He shows his paintings in various art markets throughout the year across the country. In addition to his Indian-themed works, he also paints Rocky Mountain landscapes and wildlife and switches from watercolors to acrylics at times.
